Shuttle bus pilot project to serve senior citizen's residences
A new type of bus service for senior citizens
living in Cte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce

Montreal, 6 June 2006 - Today, the Borough of Cte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce (CDN—NDG), in cooperation with the Société de transport de Montréal (STM), inaugurated a new kind of bus service designed specifically for seniors living in a residence. The shuttle project will make two new bus routes available for them to carry out their activities in the neighbourhood.

The new routes, the 21 – Navette Cte-des-Neiges and the 23 – Navette Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, will run during a one-year trial period. Each Tuesday, from 10 am to 2:30 pm, buses will drive by major residential buildings and homes for senior citizens, community centres and gardens, public libraries, Maison de la culture Cte-des-Neiges, supermarkets and other local points of interest. Buses will run every 50 minutes on the 21 route in Cte-des-Neiges and every 55 minutes on the 23 route in Notre-Dame-de-Grâce. Bus stop panels will show the shuttle’s route number in black on a gold background for easier reading.

“I feel very enthusiastic about launching these new bus routes in CDN—NDG borough, as they will enable seniors to make the most of the activities offered in the neighbourhood and to take care of all their shopping the same day,” commented borough mayor Michael Applebaum, who has been working on this project for several years now. “This pilot project is a clear demonstration of how important we feel seniors are to our community.”

Claude Trudel, chairman of the STM board of directors, added that “this community bus service was designed specifically to meet the needs of senior citizens in terms of local transportation. Such an initiative will also contribute to improving their quality of life in the neighbourhood.”
