OPUS card for students
New measures to make it easier to obtain the card
or renew the reduced fare privilege

Montréal, October 6, 2009
– The Société de transport de Montréal has implemented new measures to make it easier, between now and October 31, to obtain or renew the fare privilege enabling students to benefit from reduced public transit fares in Montréal. For example, a second photo studio is available at the Berri-UQAM station, and holders of photo ID OPUS cards can now reactivate their reduced fare privilege by going to one of the six service points that the STM has set up on its network.

STUDENTS 12-25 WHO MUST OBTAIN A PHOTO ID SMART CARD

As of today, students 12-25 will be able to go to the SPEQ Photo studio at the Berri-UQAM métro station (mezzanine level), Monday to Friday from 1:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. At any time they will also be able to go to the SPEQ Photo studio at the McGill station (2020 University), Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

STUDENTS 12-25 WHO ALREADY HAVE THEIR PHOTO ID CARD AND MUST REACTIVATE IT FOR THE 2009-2010 SCHOOL YEAR

Each school year, students 12-25 must reactivate their reduced fare privilege before October 31 to be eligible for reduced fares. To do this, they can now go to one of the six service points located in the Côte-Vertu, Lionel-Groulx, Honoré-Beaugrand and Jean-Talon stations as well as at the STM terminus at the Fairview-Pointe-Claire shopping centre, Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. They can also go to the Customer Service Centre at the Berri-UQAM station, Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

More service points to respond to customer needs
By doubling the number of photo studio locations and increasing the number of service points, the STM is demonstrating that it is listening to its customers and doing everything possible to simplify life for students who have until October 31, 2009, to reactivate their reduced fare privilege and thus save $378 per year. After this date, if they have not obtained or reactivated their fare privilege, they will have to pay the full fare to travel on the STM’s network.

It should also be noted that the Chair of the STM’s Board of Directors, Mr. Michel Labrecque, met last week with the Chair of the Commission scolaire de Montréal, Mme Diane de Courcy, to set up a collaboration that will enable the STM to reach students more easily for the 2010-11 school year, something that will certainly improve the procedure for the issuance or renewal of the cards.

Since its launch in April 2008, the STM has issued close to one million OPUS cards. Modifications have been made along the way to respond to comments from customers. Along the same lines, the measures announced today offer students who have not yet been able to obtain their card or renew their reduced fare privilege a greater number of locations on the network.
