The STM introduces a new fare product:
The Tandem VÉLO-STM pass

Montréal, June 3, 200
9 The chairman of the STM board of directors, Michel Labrecque, took the opportunity presented by Operation Bike-to-Work, part of the Montréal Bike Fest, to announce the introduction of a new fare product designed exclusively for members of the cycling association, Vélo-Québec.

Tandem VÉLO – STM
“It gives me great pleasure to announce that members of Vélo-Québec will have exclusive access to the new Tandem VÉLO – STM package. Indeed, starting this fall, members can purchase an OPUS card containing five monthly fares valid from November 15 2009 to April 15, 2010. As a bonus, six single fares will also be loaded onto their card,” declared Mr. Labrecque.

“As you may know, for many years now, I have been actively promoting the concept of a transport cocktail, defined as the meshing and merging of interests between major public transit corporations (métro, bus, commuter trains, and railway companies) and private transportation means, such as bicycles, taxis, car rentals, car sharing cooperatives and car pools,” added Mr. Labrecque.

This policy proposes a solution that could convince a large number of motorists of occasionally leaving their cars behind. Instead of having cyclists revert back to car use when the weather turns cold again, the STM is offering Vélo-Québec members easy access to public transit at an affordable cost.

The new Tandem VÉLO – STM pass reflects the STM position that, while favouring the development of public transportation, goes one step further by promoting the use of active means of transportation that are of an ecological nature and that have a positive impact on the environment. It goes without saying that this new fare product addresses the needs of these clients, who are already fervent supporters of active transportation,” claimed Mr. Labrecque, adding that he hopes the STM will develop other fare products adapted to various client groups.

Mouvement collectif
During the Tour de l’Île de Montréal, in the wake of its partnership with Vélo-Québec and intent on reaching its goal, the STM will be on site, at Parc Jeanne-Mance, under the Mouvement collectif big top.

At that time, the STM will take the opportunity, as its partners will, to raise public awareness about the transport cocktail and the positive impact it can have on the environment. Finally, the STM will offer visitors a sampling of its many transit fares, giving them a chance to win annual, monthly and weekly fare subscriptions, as well as single fares.
