Waste management:
The STM carries out a pilot project in three métro stations

Montréal, October 26, 2009
– On October 15, the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) embarked on a waste management pilot project in three stations in the métro network - Mont-Royal, Champ-de-Mars and Snowdon.

Green zones, consisting of three containers, have been set up in each of these stations. Two of these are for recycling: one for fibres (newspapers, paper, cardboard), and the other for plastic, glass and metal containers. The third is for other waste material.

With the creation of these green zones, the STM would like, among other things, to reduce the quantity of recyclable materials that turn up in the garbage. In this regard, an analysis carried out in the fall of 2008 revealed that close to 70% of the content of the garbage containers in the métro stations consisted of recyclable materials.

Customer participation is thus essential for effective management of the recyclable materials in the stations. This is why the STM is asking for everyone’s co-operation in using the green zones in the stations that have them.

Lastly, it should be pointed out that the three-month project will allow the Société, once the results are known, to define the implementation strategy for its waste management plan. The creation of green zones in all the métro stations should then take place during 2010.
