Montréal, September 20, 2013 – The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) is continuing its efforts to provide universal accessibility within its métro system. Starting mid-October, work will be undertaken to install three elevators at the Snowdon station, thus optimizing travel for customers with functional limitations. The Snowdon station, through which 3.8 million people passed in 2012, is one of the stations targeted to have elevators installed under the 2012-2015 Universal Accessibility Plan. It was selected based on the evaluation criteria set out by the Montréal métro accessibility committee: ridership, intermodality, fair distribution of projects throughout the service area, and local surroundings (hospitals, schools, tourism, culture, etc.). Snowdon will become the 10th accessible station. To continue providing high-quality service and upgrade the building, the work, which will last approximately 28 months, will also include renovating the main entrance, the fare payment area, and various floors of the building, replacing electrical equipment, enlarging the building and reinforcing the foundations. The Snowdon station will remain open during the work. A safe pedestrian walkway will be created on Queen-Mary Road to facilitate access to the station. Automobile traffic will be somewhat affected as street sections will be closed off, including Westbury Avenue between Queen Mary Road and Dornal Avenue, half of Dornal Avenue and one lane of Queen-Mary Road in front of the station. Stops on lines 51 and 166 will be relocated to the east side of the Snowdon station. This work is made possible through the financial support of Transports Québec.
