The STM announces a new reserved lane for buses and taxis on de l’Acadie

Press release

Montréal, July 16, 2015 – The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) announces the opening of a new reserved lane on portions of boulevard de l’Acadie in the borough of Ahuntsic-Cartierville, starting July 27, 2015. The reserved lane, along with bus priority traffic lights that will be installed at a later date, will benefit the nearly 10,000 trips taken daily aboard the 179 and 180 buses, the two main bus lines serving that corridor.

Extending over a total length of 4.4 km (both directions combined), the reserved lane will be operational on weekdays. The southbound lane will be in service between Victor-Doré and Lavigerie, from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., and between Caroline-Beique and Beauharnois, from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and again from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. In turn, the northbound lane will be in service between Legendre and Louvain from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and again from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., and between Port-Royal and Place de l’Acadie, from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Furthermore, the city of Montréal is planning on adding priority traffic lights (white « candlestick » lights) that operate during off-peak hours in a second phase of work, sometime in 2016. These lights ensure priority is given to buses at the intersections where they are installed.

« Thanks to these installations along boulevard de l’Acadie, the reserved lane will not only improve the daily commute for borough residents heading to the métro, but also do so for workers in the Marché central area who need transportation to that important employment hub, » declared Philippe Schnobb, chairman of the STM board of directors.

« With the deployment of bus priority measures along a busy boulevard that has both commercial and residential sectors on each side, the transit service offer is further enhanced, travel is more fluid, and passengers save a significant amount of travel time, » added Aref Salem, Montréal executive committee member responsible for transportation.

« This is excellent news for the thousands of Ahuntsic-Cartierville borough residents who use the 179 and 180 bus lines. I would like to thank the STM for working with us to improve public transit service in our area, » explained Pierre Gagnier, mayor of Ahuntsic-Cartierville and member of the STM board of directors.

The STM reminds that bus priority measures consist of installations on the road system that ensure priority is given to public transit, thereby improving the reliability and on-time delivery of service. Bus priority measures, which include reserved lanes and priority traffic lights, help shorten travel times by about 10%. To date, including the sections of reserved lane along the De l’Acadie corridor, the STM has deployed bus priority measures along 189.4 km of roads, and 145 intersections feature priority traffic lights, bringing total coverage to a little over 215.1 km. The STM is aiming for 375 km by 2017.
