UNIVERSAL ACCESS AT DU COLLÈGE STATION BY 2018

Press release

The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) is announcing a $10 M investment at Du Collège métro station on the Orange line that will allow for the installation of elevators in summer 2018, in a bid to improve the customer experience and quality of transit rides, especially for customers with limited mobility.

The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) is announcing a $10 M investment at Du Collège métro station on the Orange line that will allow for the installation of elevators in summer 2018, in a bid to improve the customer experience and quality of transit rides, especially for customers with limited mobility.

The project to make the station universally accessible follows in the wake of the decision to build a new underground garage at Côte-Vertu station. Indeed, that will result in the station being temporarily closed for a least ten weeks in summer 2018. Prior to closing that station, Du Collège will be equipped with elevators to minimize the impact on transit users.

« The project to build the Côte-Vertu garage will enable the STM to increase its offer of service on the Orange line. Such major construction work will however require that Côte-Vertu station be closed for several weeks, depriving customers of a station with universal access. To compensate for that situation, elevators will be added at Du Collège station before work begins at Côte-Vertu, providing another tangible example of STM’s concern for the transit experience for customers, » stated Philippe Schnobb, chairman of the STM board of directors.

« Accessibility with regards to Montréal’s public transit system is a priority for the City. These investments are needed and are good news for Montrealers who will benefit from this new installation, as getting around the city will be made easier for them, » added Aref Salem, responsible for transportation with Montréal’s executive committee.

Two elevators will be built into the north-side entryway. The latter will also be expanded so that the train platforms can be linked to the mezzanine and the mezzanine to the entrance at street level.

Work to install the elevators should begin in winter 2017 and be completed by summer 2018.

With 10 bus lines converging on the station, Du Collège has over 10,000 passengers going through its doors on weekdays.

Accessible stations

The STM’s métro system now has 10 accessible stations: Montmorency, de la Concorde, Cartier, Henri-Bourassa, Jean-Talon, Berri-UQAM, Champ-de-Mars, Lionel-Groulx, Snowdon and Côte-Vertu on the Orange line. Construction work is already underway at Rosemont, Place-d’Armes and Honoré-Beaugrand stations. Lastly, other such projects are planned for Viau and Vendôme stations (operational by 2019), as well as at Mont-Royal station (operational by 2020).
