Indicators and open data: the STM continues its move toward open data

Press release

The STM follows up on its approach toward open data and announces that it intends to publish three times a year a a review of its 2025 strategic organizational plan.

Montréal, March 22, 2019 — For the past couple of years, the STM has decided to focus on transparency and publish different indicators on its website. This includes the list of tracking indicators for our strategic plan, and certain data on the métro service and customer service. They are updated monthly.

Following up on that engagement, the STM intends to publish three times a year, in May, September and April (with the publication of its annual report) a review of its 2025 strategic organizational plan to provide a clear picture of its progress regarding the set objectives.

Transition to open data already underway

At the same time, by following the leadership of the City of Montréal, which has opened up its data to everyone, the STM is allowing it to be used for different purposes, including commercial ones. This is because, ultimately, the results from reusing the STM’s data can be shared in the community.

Certain data sets are already available on the STM’s website and on the City of Montreal’s portal, such as planned bus schedules and real-time data.

In 2021, at the end of our process, which we started a few months ago, the STM will have made all of its data available to the public. To achieve our goal, we will gradually open up blocks of data.

Next steps

End of April 2019: An initial block will provide access to data related to métro operation, including incidents and kilometres travelled.

By the end of 2019: Other blocks will be opened up and provide access to many different types of data, including métro station ridership, bus service hours or paratransit ridership.

“With this data, the STM will allow others to track and find out the specific performance of its bus and métro networks. By opening up its data and making its various indicators public, the STM ensures increased transparency of its actions in the long term,” says Philippe Schnobb, Chairman of the STM Board of Directors.
