STM pursues its commitment to sustainable development by encouraging montrealers to use public transit during the march on september 27

Press release

The STM encourages the population to be kind to the environment by using public transit during the climate march this coming September 27.

Montréal, September 24, 2019 — In the same way as during other major events in Montréal, the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) encourages the population to be kind to the environment by using public transit during the climate march this coming September 27.

According to Philippe Schnobb, Chairman of the STM Board of Directors, “This major climate march is totally in keeping with the STM’s commitment to be part of the solution in the short, medium and long terms for Montrealers, particularly by encouraging the use of public transit in a number of ways. By making sustainable development the underlying theme of its 2025 Strategic Organizational Plan, the STM promotes sustainable actions, both in its daily operations and via the application of a sustainable development policy throughout the organization. You may remember that in September 2010 the STM signed the International Association of Public Transport’s (UITP’s) Sustainability Charter in Brussels.”

Our commitment to sustainable development permeates all levels of the organization. Greenhouse gas emissions per passenger kilometre shrank by 3.1% in 2018. The proportion of hybrid and electric buses reached 14.9%, and we stepped up our transportation electrification efforts. In deploying our numerous projects we take into account sustainable development, including LEED and Envision certifications, sustainable procurement and social acceptability. We encourage you to consult our Sustainable Development report, available on our website, for details about STM initiatives in this area.

Tips for September 27
Although the climate march itinerary is not yet known, we recommend that you opt for the métro network, as there will likely be changes to the bus service. Métro service will be adjusted to meet needs, and personnel will be available at the different stations to direct participants.

We thus encourage public transit users to consult the available information tools, including a Web page devoted to the climate march, to plan their trips. Information will also be available throughout their trips, via the usual tools.

Please note that the high ridership generated by the march means that bicycles will not be allowed in métro cars throughout the network on the day of the event.
