The STM and sustainable development

Our firm commitment

The STM mission and business plan are a reflection of its commitment to sustainable development and its firm intention to become a leader in this field.

The Plan d’affaires 2007-2011 – Des actions durables features six priorities, with the sixth one focusing specifically on sustainable development. This priority is fundamental to the business plan and consists of a single action:

Include a sustainable development approach in all STM business methods and practices

The STM is a member of the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) and, as such, signed the commitment to its Charter on Sustainable Development in 2005. Through this action, it expressed its intention to integrate sustainable development in its business methods and practices, to create awareness and provide training to employees, and to measure the progress in an ethical and transparent way.

Favourable influencing factors

The STM has based its approach to sustainable development on:

  • Its own raison d’être, closely linked to Montréal’s own sustainable development
  • Committed governments
  • Mobilized employees
  • Citizens concerned with environmental issues
  • Dynamic partners contributing to sustainable development

Our approach to sustainable development

In 2007, the STM initiated a process to act upon its intention to integrate the principles of sustainable development in all its business methods and practices.

In 2008, STM leaders officially launched the process and appointed a sustainable development committee (CDD). In light of the importance already given to sustainable development in the corporation’s everyday activities, the committee was able to consolidate existing knowledge in order to prepare a plan of action.

The action plan for sustainable development translates the main elements of the Business plan in terms of sustainable development. It is articulated around three lines of intervention and twelve major orientations, as well as targets and indicators, so that the STM’s performance can be monitored over the years.

The STM expects to reach its goal of introducing the principles of sustainable development into its business methods and practices by the 2011 horizon by implementing elements of continuous improvement.
