Boarding buses via all doors: STM allows the practice on 13 lines served by articulated buses

News

Building on the success of pilot projects conducted on the 121, 139 and 439 bus lines, Société de transport de Montréal will allow passengers to board buses via all doors, starting next June 19 and under certain conditions, on 13 bus lines using articulated buses. This approach is consistent with ongoing efforts to improve the customer experience by speeding up boarding and ensuring better distribution of passengers inside.

Therefore, using the rear doors to board the bus will be allowed on the following bus lines under the following conditions:

Bus lines:

45 – Papineau; 67 – Saint-Michel; 69 – Gouin; 80 – Avenue du Parc; 121 – Sauvé/Côte-Vertu;
139 – Pie-IX; 165 – Côte-des-Neiges; 193 – Jarry; 197 – Rosemont; 435 – Express du Parc/Côte-des-Neiges; 439 – Express Pie-IX; 467 – Express Saint-Michel; 470 – Express Pierrefonds

Conditions:

  • At bus stops located at métro stations only
  • From 5 am to 7 pm
  • With articulated buses on selected bus lines
  • For weekly and monthly pass holders (including subscriptions for annual and 4-month passes): customers using other fare cards must continue to validate their payment and, as such, must continue to use the front doors to board the bus
  • Honour system for fare payment
  • Boarding buses on the 139-439 lines stays the same. In other words, passengers can board via the rear doors at all bus stops when there are sufficient numbers, as this will apply once the Pie-IX SRB (bus rapid transit) line is implemented.

Advantages
Since the pilot project was initiated in March 2016, boarding via all doors has had positive aspects, namely shorter boarding times and better distribution of passengers inside the bus.

Indeed:

  • 1082 hours saved in boarding time on the 121 line; 609 hours on the 139 line and another 47 hours on the 439
  • 88% of customers agree with the approach and think it is right to allow the practice
  • 77% of customers are satisfied with allowing this practice
  • 72% of customers have noticed that the boarding process is faster
  • 76% of drivers appreciate the new boarding process
