After 25 weekends of planned closures, the métro’s Yellow line is operational again, seven days a week, just in time for the Holidays!

The work calendar for this large-scale project was strictly adhered to and no other shutdowns are expected. Complementary work will continue at night in 2015, but transit users will not even notice.

Summary of work

The purpose behind the repairs done in 2014 was to restore the structural integrity of the tunnel’s concrete ceiling. More specifically, we:

  1. Sealed the cracks in the concrete
  2. Channelled the water infiltrations
  3. Performed various electrical work

Keep in mind that degradation is normal for concrete in underground structures. Built in the early 1960s, the Yellow line is no exception, especially as it runs under water!

At no time was the safety of transit users ever compromised. Our intervention was timely, thanks to strict inspections carried out regularly.

A few numbers…

The following statistics illustrate the scope of this project:

  • Over 535 sq. metres of concrete was broken off
  • Some 180 drilling sites were needed to channel the runoff water
  • Over 905 linear metres of cracks were sealed
  • Nearly 1,200 litres of sealant were injected into the cracks
  • Over 2,000 metres of pipes were used to channel runoff water
  • Some 530 sq. metres of wire mesh sheathing was sprayed with concrete
  • Three shuttle bus routes with 60 buses provided service each day
  • Some 700,000 customers used the shuttle service

This work is made possible through funding from the ministère des Transports du Québec.
