As part of a cultural exchange program, the métro company of Lisbon, Portugal presented this 19-metre-tall sculpture as a gift to the Montréal métro. The huge work was installed in 1997 on Île Sainte-Hélène, a few minutes’ walk from the station.

About the artist

Born in Lisbon in 1935, sculptor Charters de Almeida has created numerous works of public art in Portugal and around the world. His work in Montréal paid homage to the 30th anniversary of the métro and Expo 67, as well as the city’s vibrant Portuguese community.
