Vehicule shortages

As the strike progresses, there will be a shortage of vehicles due to maintenance delays. This shortage may result in bus departure cuts.

Bus services to schools will be provided until the holiday break.

As for the return to school in January, it is too early to say at this time.

Frequently asked questions

During this period, bus, métro, and paratransit services are maintained.

No impact. Service will be provided as normal throughout the strike.

Service will be 100% operational 24/7 throughout the strike. The STM has a sufficient reserve of trains to deliver the scheduled service.

Bus service will be provided as scheduled at all times, 7 days a week, during the strike.

However, as the strike progresses, the number of available vehicles may decrease, particularly due to:

  • Refusal of overtime
  • PTO for the holidays
  • Unplanned mechanical breakdowns
  • Winter conditions

This could result in delays or cancellations of bus trips.

You can follow the evolution of the situation on this webpage.

For this strike, no service interruptions are planned. Bus and métro services will continue as usual.

However, overtime is essential to keep the bus fleet in service. It helps compensate for absenteeism, illness, and prevents maintenance delays. Without overtime, repairs accumulate, and vehicle availability decreases.

In the current context, three factors are contributing:

  • the holiday season (fewer staff),
  • the refusal of overtime by maintenance employees,
  • unplanned mechanical breakdowns.

Together, these factors are likely to gradually reduce the number of buses available. As a result, bus service could be affected by trip cancellations as the strike continues, which sets it apart from previous strikes.

We use overtime to achieve operational flexibility (approximately 14%). This means we use overtime to deliver our regular service, and even more so during the holiday season when employees are on vacation.

Yes.

At this time, and following the decision of the Tribunal administratif du travail (TAT), the planned bus and métro service for these holidays will be provided. However, there may be some impacts on station maintenance and cleanliness due to the overtime strike.

No.

No bus is put into service unless it is safe. Regular maintenance standards apply to the métro.

According to current projections, effects on bus service could be felt until next January.

Fewer repairs cause fewer buses available to deliver service.

According to our estimates, we could be short up to 260 buses to deliver the service as of January 5. This represents service cuts of approximately 1000 departures per day or 600 hours of service or 15% of the service offering.

For the bus network, the return to normal could take several weeks depending on the weather, breakdowns and the extent of the backlog.

These are options we will evaluate as the situation evolves. However, it is certain that slowing down preventative maintenance plans will have longer-term impacts than the duration of the strike.

During regular working hours (7 days a week, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.), maintenance workers will clear snow and spread salt, depending on weather conditions, around métro stations.

Outside of these regular hours, the Tribunal administratif du travail's decision stipulates the following guidelines:

  • No de-icing below 25 mm of freezing rain
  • No snow removal below 5 cm of snow

If such situations arise and it becomes necessary to intervene outside these guidelines, we will plead before the Tribunal administratif du travail to ensure public health and safety.

Bus

For the moment, yes.

Planned schedules are updated the evening before. Confirm the departure of your bus the morning of your trip in the Schedules section of the website to ensure your trip.

Important!

Our Trip Planner is based on planned schedules. It does not show bus trip cuts in real time.

This is why it is essential to prioritize the Schedules section of the website to plan your trips.

As the strike progresses, it is possible that planned schedules and real-time information deteriorate due to the lack of vehicles and the inability of our teams to update our computer systems in time. If this is the case, the information will be put forward on this web page.

We anticipate that impacts on the bus network may be felt in January. At that time, customers are encouraged to consult the real-time schedules just before their trip to have the most accurate information.

Unfortunately, as service adjustment decisions will be made daily by our field teams based on a multitude of factors, we cannot provide customers with a predictable schedule. Customers will need to rely on the real-time schedules.

For the moment, stm.info remains the source of truth for bus schedules.

Good to know!

You can locate your bus on the map and follow its position in real time to confirm that it is heading in the right direction.

Simply enter your bus line number here.

If the bus service adjustments to be made in our computer systems are too significant, our website will be preferred. It is therefore recommended, in the context of a strike, to always favor information tools specific to the STM instead of third-party applications.

Check the Schedules section of our website or consult your real-time bus schedules.

The ability to repair all vehicles is limited due to the overtime strike by maintenance employees. Combined with reduced staff during the holiday season, mechanical breakdowns and weather conditions (e.g.: snowstorm), the available fleet gradually decreases as the strike progresses.

This explains why certain departures may be canceled.

Yes.

For the moment, we are able to maintain the REM shuttles. The situation could change over the coming weeks depending on vehicle availability.

Métro

No.

The métro respects usual opening hours. No early station closures due to the strike.

Compensation

The ARTM is not planning on issuing refunds for validated monthly or weekly passes.

Other fare types can be used at a later date or may be eligible for a refund, in line with the ARTM’s exchange and refund policy.

The exchange and refund policy is determined by the ARTM, which decides on pricing issues for the STM. If you have purchased a monthly pass for the coming month, it is refundable as long as it has not yet begun its first day of validity.

We understand that the strike can have a significant impact on our customers. Rest assured that we are doing everything in our power to minimize the impacts.

The ARTM will not offer monetary compensation for clients who will incur alternative travel costs or who are unable to travel to their workplace. Customers are encouraged to plan ahead, prioritize active transportation and work from home wherever possible.

The STM is committed to providing customers with daily updates on service status during the strike.
