To help celebrate the Saison de la lecture de Montréal, City of Montréal libraries, the STM, and the Association des libraires du Québec (ALQ) have launched “Reading transports you.” This three-month pilot project provides public access to a free digital library of some forty French-language books in selected buses and bus shelters.

With this project, passengers can use a QR code or URL to download the first chapter of a selected book with their smart phone, tablet, or e-book reader.  The books are divided into five categories: youth and adventure; mysteries; historical novels; escapism, cooking and travel; and tales of love and other stories.  Readers will then be invited to borrow a paper or digital copy of the book from one of the City of Montréal’s 45 libraries or buy a paper or digital copy at the  RueDesLibraires.com Web site. They can also use the app to locate the nearest library or book store.

“Next time you’re travelling by bus or metro, take a moment to count the number of passengers who are reading, very often while listening to music. That’s one of the many advantages of public transit: we can use our travel time to read. That’s why it was natural for us to participate in the “Reading transports you” project with Montréal libraries and the ALQ to promote the reading of and accessibility to books by local authors in an innovative way,” explained Michel Labrecque, chair of the STM.

Operation “Reading transports you” will run until January 20 in 125 buses and 50 bus shelters.
