Corporate Knights sustainable development magazine has ranked the STM first among Canadian enterprises for its exemplary corporate responsibility practices.
Montreal, June 26, 2024 – Corporate Knights released its annual list of Canada’s Best 50 Corporate Citizens, and the STM took the top spot. Among 340 Canadian companies with revenues over $1 billion, the STM was the only transit organization to make the list.
“Our vision is to be a leader in sustainable mobility, and taking first place on this list shows that our work is paying off,” says Marie-Claude Léonard, CEO of the STM. “Our commitment to sustainability is reflected in our Strategic Organizational Plan and our Sustainable Development Plan, both of which underscore our efforts to further integrate sustainable practices into everything we do.”
The STM credits its enviable ranking to a number of factors, including the percentage of its investments that have gone to supporting sustainable and low-carbon footprint activities, as well as the percentage of bus and metro rides powered by electricity.
Other key success factors include the STM’s low greenhouse gas emissions and high proportion of women in leadership on its executive committee and board of directors.
The ranking results speaks to the fact that public transit is an essential part of the fight against climate change and an important solution for meeting carbon neutrality targets at various levels of government.
“By continuing to improve and expand our service offering, we’ll be able to attract more customers and have an even more positive impact on the environment,” says Léonard. “But we are going to need stable, recurrent public transit funding from all of our funders.”
About Corporate Knights’ Best 50
Each year, eligible Canadian companies are evaluated on 25 environmental, social and governance indicators and benchmarked against their international peers. The top 50 companies are then ranked.
