Work at Atwater station

Project summary

Atwater is now the 30th universally accessible station in the Métro network!

Two elevators link the platform level to the mezzanine level. A third elevator, located in Place Alexis-Nihon, connects the mezzanine level to the street level.

Find out more about universal accessibility in the metro network.

Duration of the work: February 12, 2024, to April 14, 2025.

Description of the work:

  • Installation of two elevators in existing shafts
  • Installation of equipment in mechanical rooms
  • Addition of two new turnstiles and changes to existing ones
  • Relocation of store inside station

Impact on customer trips

  • When the work begins, the store inside the station will need to close. It will reopen once the work is completed.
  • The left-hand doors from the Alexis Nihon shopping centre will be blocked off. The station will remain accessible via the right-hand doors.

Impact on local residents

The work will happen entirely inside the station.

Why will the elevators be installed so quickly compared to other stations?

Because most of the work is already done! Between 2019 and 2021, we replaced the station’s waterproofing system. This included the waterproofing membrane, which protects the station from water infiltrations. Located below ground level, the waterproofing membrane covers the station’s underground roof. It’s a bit like a giant umbrella that protects the station from leaks.

To replace the waterproofing system, we had to dig up the ground above. While we were at it, we decided to dig the elevator shafts as well to make it all more efficient and cost-effective.

The result is that the bulk of the work is already done. All that remains is to install the elevators and operational equipment, connect everything together and run tests.

If you’d like to know more, you can watch this video (French) on how we replace our waterproofing systems.

The Accessibility program is made possible thanks to the additional funding announced by the federal and provincial governments to speed up universal accessibility work with the goal of having 30 accessible métro stations by 2025.
