Bellechasse mechanical ventilation station

Project summary

As part of our asset maintenance program, we’re planning to build a mechanical ventilation station on Bellechasse Street between De Chateaubriand Avenue and De Saint-Vallier Street.

Why is this project necessary?

The current ventilation station has reached the end of its useful life and needs to be replaced by a new one to comply with current noise and ventilation standards.

The new Bellechasse mechanical ventilation station will have:

  • High-performance noise suppressors in compliance with City of Montréal noise by-laws
  • A more reliable and durable tunnel ventilation system

The outer building will be small to comply with local zoning codes and feature an inconspicuous, elegant design. The green space will be expanded by 66 square metres, and trees will be planted along the green alley.

Duration of work: The work schedule is currently being planned. The work will start no earlier than fall 2026.

Métro impacts: There will be no impact on métro service.

Bus impacts: No bus stops will be affected by this project.

Impact on local residents

Work schedule

The work will be done during the hours permitted by current municipal by-laws. Some work may be done over the weekend. Work inside the métro tunnel will be done at night (while the métro is closed).

Noise management

We understand the impact that this work may have on your activities and on neighbourhood noise levels. A noise limit will be imposed on the contractor for all worksite activities.

A team of acoustic engineers will conduct regular sound monitoring at the worksite to ensure that noise levels comply with all city by-laws and our own requirements. Mitigation measures will be applied to reach this goal.

Dust management

  • Anti-dust sheets on all worksite partitions
  • Water spraying during above-ground and underground demolitions
  • Water spraying and cleaning of worksite access routes

Traffic

The worksite will occupy rue Bellechasse, between De Chateaubriand Avenue and Saint-Vallier Street. Vehicular traffic will be prohibited, and detour routes will be set up.

  • Truck traffic to the site will be mainly on De Chateaubriand Avenue. Trucks will then enter the site on Bellechasse Street, and exit to the West.
  • Flaggers will be present for public road work and on busy days.

Nature of the work

Here are the main stages of the Bellechasse mechanical ventilation station project:

Worksite opening (partition installation, worksite trailer placement)

Fall 2026

(or later)

Demolition, pile drilling, and excavation

2026 to 2027

Concrete work

2027 to 2029

Equipment installation and landscaping

2029 to early 2030

A mechanical ventilation station is a large infrastructure located between two métro stations that is equipped with two powerful fans designed to extract hot air from the métro system through inlets fitted with air vents. Huge noise suppressors mitigate the noise from these fans to ensure quiet for residents living close to a ventilation station.

Métro mechanical ventilation stations meet three essential needs :

1. Comfort ventilation

Regulates the ambient temperature and supplies fresh air for transit users by exchanging air from the outside with air inside the métro network.

2. Night-time ventilation

Ensures a supply of fresh air for night workers carrying out routine maintenance.

3. Emergency ventilation

In the event of an incident, controls smoke and provides a safe evacuation route for passengers via the nearest métro station and ensures unobstructed access for emergency first responders.
