The first métro cars acquired by the STM, known as MR-63, have reached the end of their service life. The STM will gradually replace them as the new métro cars, named AZUR, are delivered. A few options, among them recycling, are under consideration to determine what will become of our MR-63 trains.

The MR-63s have an undeniable sentimental value to us and we have received a number of ideas for projects to reuse these symbolic cars. For this reason, talks are underway with various parties to keep a few of the cars that mean so much to the city and give them a second life. In fact, a public call for proposals will be issued in winter 2016.
Still, not all métro cars will find takers, so a call for tenders to recycle the remaining MR-63 cars was recently issued. Indeed, we would like to find a group that can collect, transport, dismantle, reclaim and recycle these cars. However, making sustainable development the central factor in all corporate decisions is a priority for the STM and, as such, we want the entire process for the disposal of MR-63 cars to comply with all existing environmental standards and regulations. Proposals will be assessed by the STM’s selection committee according to precise criteria.
