The stated end time for essential services refers to the time when buses or metro trains reach their final destinations, marking the conclusion of service across all networks.
The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) would like to provide clarification on service during the current maintenance workers’ strike.
Clarification on service end time
The stated end time for essential services refers to the time when buses or metro trains reach their final destinations, marking the conclusion of service across all networks. For example, metro stations close progressively as the last train makes its final trip, often before the officially designated end time.
The full schedule for the last trains at each station is now available on STM’s website: stm.info/greve under the section The Metro – June 9, 10, and 11. These schedules are for reference only.
Passengers are strongly advised to arrive at the station at least 10 minutes before the last train’s departure to ensure their travel plans.
For bus services, customers should rely on real-time schedules available through STM’s customer information tools (website, SMS alerts, and automated schedules by phone), as well as partner applications such as Transit and Chrono.
Empty trains at the beginning and end of service
At the start of metro service, trains must be strategically moved across the network to ensure readiness for service as soon as the permitted time begins. These non-passenger movements allow for an optimal level of service from the first authorized minute while maintaining compliance with the permitted schedule.
At the end of metro service, trains must be gradually parked. This process takes longer because each train must be stopped and inspected to confirm that it is empty. Parking trains at the same rate as they arrive at their terminus would cause congestion, similar to airplanes waiting to land at a busy airport. This is why some trains continue to circulate without passengers after service ends.
It’s important to note that empty trains will sound their horns and slow down without stopping when passing through stations. This maneuver ensures the safety of users and employees on the platforms.
To better understand the schedule of the last departures, here is an example:
Toward Montmorency
The last departure from Côte-Vertu station, toward Montmorency, is scheduled for 8:48 AM. This train arrives at Bonaventure station at 9:07 AM. This is the last departure from Bonaventure toward Montmorency. The train then continues and ends its service at 9:34 AM, upon arrival at Montmorency station.
Toward Côte-Vertu
The last departure from Montmorency station, toward Côte-Vertu, is scheduled for 8:53 AM. This train arrives at Bonaventure station at 9:19 AM. This is the last departure from Bonaventure toward Côte-Vertu. The train then continues and ends its service at 9:40 AM, upon arrival at Côte-Vertu station.
Once these two trains have passed, Bonaventure station closes.
Respect for on-site employees
The STM recognizes that the maintenance workers’ strike significantly impacts the daily lives of its customers. However, it urges the public to show respect toward employees who are present on-site to ensure essential services.
