STM announces bus service enhancements for Île-des-Sœurs

Press release

Adjustments to bus lines 168 Cité-du-Havre and 176 Berlioz and the creation of a new bus line to serve the Marguerite-Bourgeoys/Du Golf

Montréal, December 14, 2023 – The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) is announcing adjustments to bus lines 168 Cité-du-Havre and 176 Berlioz, as well as the creation of a new bus line to serve the Marguerite-Bourgeoys/Du Golf area of Île-des-Sœurs starting January 8, 2024.

“We understand that the changes made in relation to the bus network redesign have required a great deal of adaptation on the part of our customers since last summer, with the partial commissioning of the REM and the implementation of the new bus service,” says Éric Alan Caldwell, Chair of the STM Board of Directors. “Because buses are such a flexible mode of transit, we can adapt our services based on our observations on the ground and the needs expressed by local customers. Bus service in this area is the first in a series of announcements related to the bus network redesign, a project being carried out in close collaboration with the borough of Verdun and Île-des-Sœurs residents through a public consultation session held in 2019.”

“I would like to thank the STM for adapting its service offering and listening to the needs and concerns expressed by the public in recent months,” says Marie-Andrée Mauger, Mayor of Verdun. “The new bus 872 will provide better service during rush hour, and bus 168 will see its hours extended.”

Extended evening and weekend service on bus 168 Cité-du-Havre

Service on the 168 will be extended to weekday evenings, with buses running every 30 minutes. The 168 will also return to all-day service on weekends, also every 30 minutes.

As a result, service will be adjusted on bus 176 to end at 9 p.m. on weekday evenings. Buses will run every 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the time of day. With the 168 now running on weekends, the 176 will run between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. on weekends, with buses running every 20 to 30 minutes.

New bus line 872 Île-des-Sœurs

The new 872 will make it easier to travel between the Marguerite-Bourgeoys/Du Golf area, the Green line and Cité du Multimédia, via Robert-Bourassa Boulevard. This one-way bus line will run every 30 minutes on weekdays only, northbound during the morning rush hour and southbound during the afternoon rush hour.

The STM is making these temporary adjustments to help Île-des-Sœurs customers get around while they wait for the REM extension to connect them to the Green line and the rest of the West Island, which is planned for no sooner than late 2024, and for Griffintown station to open, which is planned for no sooner than 2027.

Communication strategies will be implemented in Île-des-Sœurs using digital media, on-site signage and on-the-ground employees to assist customers with travel. The STM invites its customers to plan their trips in advance using the new bus schedules available at stm.info.

About the bus network redesign

In 2018, with the public’s transportation needs in flux and the arrival of major public transit projects such as the REM and the Blue line extension, the STM began looking at ways to make its surface network more efficient and attractive, using five guiding principles to inform its approach. In addition to Île-des-Sœurs, several other areas have undergone public consultation and are now being studied for redesign. In each area, the redesign will take place in stages, some of which will be closely linked to upcoming phases of the REM.
