Pie-IX BRT: commissioning slated for November 7

Press release

The integrated Pie-IX BRT project office is announcing the gradual commissioning of the bus rapid transit (BRT) service beginning Monday, November 7.

The new BRT service will operate between Saint-Martin Boulevard in Laval and Pierre-De Coubertin Avenue in Montréal, except for the Jean-Talon area, where construction of the pedestrian tunnel to the future Blue line station is still ongoing, and the Pie-IX bridge, where renovations will be completed in 2023.

The BRT will serve eastern Laval and cross through four Montréal boroughs, offering transfers to the métro Green line (Pie-IX station), STL services in Laval and the exo5 commuter train line to Mascouche (St-Michel-Montréal-Nord station).

Pie-IX BRT

Revised service offering

Over time, the STM will adjust the BRT service commissioning according to the change in post-pandemic ridership, the various STM-led worksites currently active at Pie-IX station and at the Jean-Talon intersection, as well as those under the responsibility of the MTQ at the Pie-IX Bridge and at De la Concorde. Until then, a transition service will be in effect:

The 439 Express Pie-IX will be the main bus line using the BRT corridor, stopping at the shelters in the centre of the road.

Service frequency will be increased with three different routes:

439 Express Pie-IX (Lacordaire/Henri-Bourassa):

  • Between Notre-Dame/Pie-IX and Lacordaire/Henri-Bourassa
  • Monday to Friday, all day
  • Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

439 Express Pie-IX (Carrefour Henri-Bourassa/Pie-IX):

  • Between Pierre-De Coubertin/Pie-IX and Carrefour Henri-Bourassa/Pie-IX
  • Monday to Friday, all day
  • Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

439 Express Pie-IX (Laval):

  • Between Pierre-De Coubertin/Pie-IX and the Saint-Martin Boulevard parking in Laval
  • Southbound during morning rush hour
  • Northbound during afternoon rush hour
  • No service on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays

The schedule will be reduced, as this line will provide more local trips. Stops will be located at curbside, and the service will be perfect for shorter trips.

This is a night bus. Frequency will not change, and stops will remain at curbside.

These lines’ frequencies and itineraries will not change. exo bus lines 25 and 25B will use the BRT corridor starting early 2023.

More reliable metropolitan service

Since these STM, STL and exo buses will be using exclusive reserved lanes, they will not be slowed down by vehicle traffic. Traffic lights throughout the route will give them priority.

Safe, accessible bus shelters

At the time of commissioning, 28 BRT shelters will be available (there will eventually be 38). They will be accessible to people with functional limitations. New traffic infrastructure, including pedestrian crossing lights with digital and audio countdown, will allow pedestrians to cross to the shelters safely.

New metropolitan fare

Trips between Laval (Zone B) and Montréal (Zone A), in either direction, require an All Modes AB fare to transfer to the métro or train. For bus-only trips, customers can use a bus fare. Trips within Montréal (Zone A) require an All Modes A fare to transfer to the métro or train. For bus-only trips, customers can use a bus fare.
