Major economic benefits for the whole province

  • The STM injected $2.8 billion into the economy in 2022, including $1.89 billion in operating expenses and $920 million in capital investments.
  • This directly and indirectly supported 16,565 jobs and generated added value of $2.2 billion (contribution to GDP).
  • STM operations also generated over $450 million in tax revenues for the provincial and federal governments.
  • Over 60% of the total value added by the STM in Quebec is generated outside the administrative region of Montréal.

  • The STM does 97% of its spending in Quebec.
  • The STM does business with over 1,800 suppliers in 14 regions across Quebec.
  • Public transit generates three times the economic benefits of private car transportation.
  • There are a number of local public transit equipment manufacturers in Quebec.
  • Investing in the public transit equipment industry consolidates our industrial base and strengthens our expertise.
  • The public transit equipment industry generates annual sales of more than two billion dollars.
